While stimulating the rapid economic and social development of human society, technological innovation has also caused profound changes in the earth’s environment since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Indeed, the environmental impact of human productive activities today threatens to exceed the restorative capacity of the planet on which we live. Ozone depletion, global warming, deforestation, species extinction, acid rain, coastal and near-shore erosion, water pollution, solid waste accumulation, the emission of toxic gases, and wetland destruction--these are but a few of the ways in which rapid economic development is degrading world eco-systems. Coping with such environmental disasters has added a great deal to the cost of production, and achieving a proper balance between environmental protection and sustainable economic and social development has become an urgent concern of virtually every government worldwide. This paper analyzes the sustainable development of global society from the perspective of environmental change, focusing attention on current trends in national resource utilization, production activity, and international regulation of the environment. |
