It has been more than 6 months since Professor Kuan has left us. When Professor Wang approached me regarding a special issue of the journal in memory of Professor Kuan, I pondered over what I should write about. I recalled our first study on social enterprises in 2006; we originally aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of social enterprises in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. However, the development of social enterprises in Mainland China was still nascent; thus, we focused only on social enterprises in Taiwan and Hong Kong. At present, the social enterprise ecosystem in Mainland China is vibrant and mature. Moreover, a regulatory framework for social enterprises has been introduced in Sichuan Province. Thus, this paper focused on the characteristics and present state of social enterprises in Mainland China. Through this paper, I hope that our original aim (formulated 17 years ago) of comparing social enterprises in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong can be realized. |
