This paper introduces recent Japanese research into the history of the Mongol period with a focus on the Yuan dynasty’s rule of China and its cultural policies. Recent Japanese research into the history of this period has tended to paint a picture of a pan-Eurasian empire, treating the emergence of the Mongol Empire as an epoch-making occurrence in world history. This paper examines representative research into regional government through the cultural policies and imperial edicts of the Yuan dynasty, which ruled an area centered in China at the peak of the Mongol Empire, as well as its publishing efforts. |
