Xu Beihong(1895-1953) visited Singapore seven times throughout his entire life and he left many renowned masterpieces here, one of them was the 1939 oil painting entitled “Put down Your Whip”.
The author had visited the house of “Jiang Xia Tang” where Xu Beihong had drawn the painting “Put down Your Whip” in an attempt to have a better understanding of the style of this painting, and at the same time analyze the main character of the painting, known as Wang Ying (1913-1974) for her background and literary creation. During the visit, the author realized that this painting was Wang Ying’s portrait.
The oil painting “Put down Your Whip” drawn by Situ Qiao(1902-1958), was the real historical record of anti-Japanese war in Singapore. A comparison will be made between these two identically named paintings drawn by the two painters, and compare the poems on these two paintings, hence showing its artistic value. |
