Resolving Some Questions Concerning the Editing and Authorship of, and Illustrations in, a Rare Ming Dynasty Printed Edition of Completely Illustrated and Newly Printed Beautiful Sight Collection, Held in the Harvard-Yenching Library |
英文摘要 |
Completely Illustrated and Newly Printed Beautiful Sight Collection is an anthology of short and medium-length fictional pieces written Classical Chinese that assemble romantic love stories from the successive eras. Altogether it includes 137 selections, and can be said to represent a great synthesis of romantic love stories. But this work is quite rare, and is not listed in Bibliography of Ancient and Rare Books in China compiled on the Mainland. The thread-bound Ming dynasty printed edition of this text held in the Harvard-Yenching Library, the off-set printed edition in the Tōyō Bunko in Japan, and facsimile edition of the Tianyi Publishing House in Taiwan are all in fact received from the same source edition. The Tianyi Publishing House’s facsimile edition, however, is missing more than 80 pages from the contents of chapters 1 and 2. This essay provides an introduction, verification, and resolution of questions concerning the editing and editor of this text, as well as 33 of its illustrations. It is the author’s view that there exists a definite connection between the Beautiful Sight Collection and the Jin Ping Mei cihua. The editor of the Beautiful Sight Collection is the writer Bai Yue, from Wujin. Furthermore, it is argued that the bold, sexual description in the collection and its accompanying illustrations are products of trends in anti-Neo-Confucian, individualism, and the sexual passion evident in the late Ming period. |
