Since February 1, 2018, National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences (KUAS), National Kaohsiung Marine University (NKMU), and National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology (NKFUST) have merged to form the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST). After the merge, we are convinced that“a bilingual university is a policy, a trend, a must.”We are also the first national university to set a vision for the 2028 Bilingual University Project on November 4th, 2020. Since nearly 90% of the students from the three universities are from vocational high schools, the English proficiency gap is quite large due to the lack of English learning hours and resources. To effectively narrow the gap and improve students' practical and professional English proficiency, we first standardize the entire school’s English graduation threshold while offering innovative English courses, providing rich English self-learning resources, and holding various creative English competitions. By systematically collecting relevant data and conducting statistical analysis year by year, we can better understand the English learning status of students among the five campuses in a comprehensive manner. Moreover, the data analysis shows that the measures implemented so far create a quality English learning environment and significantly improve students' English learning outcomes. The first step toward the goal of a bilingual university in 2028 has proved quite successful. |
