In 1948, Y. R. Chao, and only last year, Professor F. K. Li, whom we are honouring in this volume, discussed the voiced velar fricative or semivocalic constriction which characterizes the so-called ''zero initial'' in Mandarin. They have shown that it is not only recognizable phonetically but must also be distinguished phonologically from a true zero initial which occurs in the enclitic particle -a . The ,recognition of a similar velar semivowel occurring in other positions, structurally parallel to palatal i and labial u, will help to solve a number of problems that have made difficulties in the analysis of Mandarin phonology. |
