Among the archaeological objects of the Shang, Chou, Ch'in, and Han dynasties excavated near Mt. Yen and in the vicinity of the Great Wall, are several knife and dagger handles made of bronze in the shape of animal heads, as well as animal-shaped three-dimensional or openwork objects made of bronze, gold, or silver. These artifacts belong to the art category known as ''animal style'' because of the many animal motifs with which art is adorned. Because many objects of this type were discovered in Ordas at the beginning of this century, they are commonly called ''Ordos-style bronzes''. Regardless of whether or not the objects were scientifically excavated, the sites where these objects were discovered are scattered extensively throughout China. The majority of the sites, however, are concentrated in Inner Mongolia and the northern parts of Shansi, Shensi and Hopei provinces. These objects are therefore also called ''Northern-style bronzes''. |
