Based on observations of literacy practices among Thai-Chinese, this research attempts to reconceptualize Chineseness through materiality and to determine how Chineseness influences materiality as well. Most of the crucial points discussed in this dissertation will be the transformation of the writing system, which means some of the Hanzi literacy practices have been substituted by the Thai alphabet, but the inner cultural logic is the same. Although some influential research in the past described Thai-Chinese as an assimilation model, but the real condition in Thai society should be seen as hybridity. Nevertheless, because these two different cultures have different literacy traditions, the consequence of hybridity is that the practices of Hanzi literacy have influenced the literacy practices of the Thai writing system. |
