Since the Communist Party of China (CPC) established its regime in 1949, it has gradually set up a totalitarian political structure under which the state monopolizes all resources. Within this structure, the people are bereft of autonomy and therefore have no other choice but to rely on the state, and there exists a high integration between the state and society. Since the policy of opening-up and reform was adopted in 1978, the CPC has taken a series of measures to release its control and make concessions. These measures have resulted in relaxing its control on and enhancing the autonomy of society, and have thus ameliorated the relationship between the state and society. A shift in the research focus of academic circles has accompanied these policy changes of the CPC. Namely, research has shifted from the totalitarianism, pluralism modes to the state and society, market-shifting, and corporatism modes. The paper principally analyzes the views on the state and society since 1989 in the People’s Republic of China under CPC rule. |
