This article reviews the interaction between Sociology and China Study in the past half century Taiwan. The case of Taiwan shows that forces of academic globalization and localization have deeply influenced the development of Sociological China Studies. Before the China’s economic reform, Taiwan has occupied a unique position to “access” China’s reality so we had produced a great deal of knowledge that help the academia to understand China. After the reform, China has opened its border for foreign sociologists so the advantage of the cultural intimacy the unique position of Taiwan is vanishing. Using the data of the major sociological journals and the research projects sponsored by National Science Foundation of Taiwan, we demonstrate how the Sociologists in Taiwan respond to the transition of China Studies in the global level and how they reshape the China Studies in Taiwan. Conclusively, we show how the Sociological perspective brings the paradigm shift of China studies in Taiwan. |
