In the six decades since the end of WWII New Zealand's economy and its trading links have become totally transformed in their nature and their direction. Sixty years ago New Zealand's largest trading partner, accounting for more than 90 per cent of exports was Britain. Today, while its largest trading partner is now Australia, that position is likely to be usurped by China. New Zealand now has FTAs with five countries in the Asian region in addition to the Australia-NZ-ASEAN agreement. This paper will outline the way in which the central focus of New Zealand's trade interests has shifted from Europe to Asia over the last half century and in particular will focus on the more recent trends in trade and economic cooperation agreements towards closer and broader economic integration with a number of Asian economies |
