The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan retains an Albion Hand Printing Press made in 1872, which is considered the first movable type printing press in Taiwan. It has been exactly 150 years (2022). The National Science and Technology Museum and the Taiwan Presbyterian Church cooperated in 2020 to carry out cultural relics repair and research on this historic Albion letterpress press and its components, which have previously published a discussion on the cultural heritage value of this letterpress printing machine. This paper describes the 'repair purpose' of the Science and Technology Museum and the Taiwan Presbyterian Church after negotiating with this printing machine, and then based on the 'Nizhny Tagil Charter' (The Nizhny Tagil Charter), explains the value definition of Industrial Heritage to study, discuss and formulate 'Restoration Guidelines'. The museum invited several cultural relics conservators and professionals in Taiwan to inspect this batch of cultural relics, provide opinions, and formulate the 'Restoration Criteria Plan', which was then implemented and the entire 'restoration process' documented. The Albion Hand Printing Press is displayed in the Science and Technology Museum and the National Taiwan Literature Museum. |
