Kinesio tape has been commonly used in medical and sports fields in recent years. However, the effect of Kinesio tape has not been well supported and controversial in previous studies. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effect of quadriceps Kinesio tape on lower extremity function and performance in healthy individuals. Original studies published between 2011 to 2021 in English or Chinese languages were included. Eleven original studies met the criteria, of which 6 assessed muscle strength; 4 assessed muscle activation; 7 assessed functional motion performance; 2 assessed proprioception; 2 assessed balance. Our results show a lack of evidence to support the quadriceps Kinesio tape to enhance muscle strength, muscle activation, functional sports performance, and balance in healthy individuals. Further research is needed to determine the effect of quadriceps Kinesio tape on proprioception. According to our findings, quadriceps Kinesio tape is not recommended as a primary option for healthy individuals who intend to increase lower extremity function and performance. Future research is needed to investigate the influence of the quadriceps Kinesio tape on proprioception in various populations to help clinicians select appropriate interventional tools based on clients’ needs. |
