It makes a record with the highest total circulation of comic series in Japan, reaching 320 million copies since its premier. ONEPIECE also receives acclamation widely from around the world, and becomes one of the significant works which cannot be ignored when regarding Japanese culture. OnePiece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy. With his diverse friends as well as his crew, Luffy explores the grand line in search of the world's ultimate treasure known as 'One Piece,' in order to become the next King of the Pirates, the strongest king in the world. This research sheds light on that the protagonist is pursuing to be the most powerful king in the world of ONEPIECE. In modern Japan where democracy is widely valued, for what reason makes a story be accepted when it is about a certain character becoming a king? This research is going to examine from the requirements of being a king in this comic series. To put it in another way, this research is trying to define ONEPIECE as a story which produces a king modern society is eager for, a modern legend of monarchy. |
