Before developing an effective way of using cognates in teaching Japanese, it is necessary to understand what the Japanese learners and teachers think about cognates that exist in both languages. The objective of this researc h is to conduct a survey to understand their perception in this area. From the survey on the students, the following key learnings can be concluded, 1) 80% of the students are interested in learning the words; 2) 90% of the students have used the knowledge from their mother tongue to guess the meaning of those Japanese words that are made of Chinese characters; 3) 80% of the students recognized that their knowledge in Chinese helps them learning same form of words in Japanese. From the survey on the teachers, the following key learnings can be concluded, 1) 80% of the teachers think it is very important to teach the words; 2) 80% of the teachers agree that it is beneficial to the students when they make practical use of Chinese in teaching Japanese; 3) 70% of teachers think it is equally important to focus on cognates in Japanese and Chinese as on words that are not shared the same form in these two languages.
