From a Kuomintang supporter and a leader of Selangor anti-Japanese movement before Pacific War; to one of the founding members of Malayan (later Malaysian) Chinese Association (MCA), part of the Malayan independent delegation to London to negotiate for the country’s independence and first Finance Minister of Malaya. The life of H. S. Lee could say as a microcosm of the identity changes of the Malayan Chinese. This paper will focus on the formative years of HS Lee in Malaya, from a Cambridge graduate, arrived in Malaya in the mid-1920s to manage family business, rapidly rise in just a decade as one of the Chinese community leaders in Selangor, in order to explain the restoration of Lee’s position as a leader in the postwar period and even served as first finance minister after independence. |
