1969 was a significant watershed in the development of Malaysia politics. The two different phases prior and after 1969 is also reflected in education, culture, arts and everyday life. From 1950-1969, Sinophone Malaysian literature in the complex historical conditions of post-civil war in mainland China, Cold War in Southeast Asia region, together with the Malayan independent movement, had cultivated some sort of new force by south migrated literati of non-left. Different from previous left-wing literati, with self-exiled consciousness, this group of writers try to propagate Chinese culture and traditions overseas, at the same time bring along the literary legacy of Republican to Singapore and Malaya. The south migrated literati of Republican China also played an important role in education, press, publishing industry in Malaya, thus had shaping the unique ecology of Malayan Chinese culture. In literary field, it had facilitated the Sinophone Malayan literature of Republican favour or colours. They inherited the ideas and thought of freedom, aesthetic experiences and values of Republican era. Hence provide the conditions for the rise of modernism in 1960s. This research intended to survey the formation and transformation of Republican favour or colours in Sinophone Malayan literature from the perspective of literary history, as well as its ideas and the tone of writing, and also try to re-examine certain aspect which has omitted, intentionally or unintentionally, by the existing literary history. |
