This paper aims to compare social values and child raising behaviors in Taiwan, and Vietnam and Indonesia where the majority of foreign-born Taiwanese spouses originate. The empirical results analyzed, from the European and World Values Surveys, indicate that Taiwanese share a greater degree of value similarity with the Vietnamese, especially on issues related to religious belief and characteristics of child raising. This survey data also shows that Vietnamese and Indonesian respondents are much conservative on issues related to gender roles and motherhood for females. In terms of social justice, Indonesians maintain a more restrictive position than do Taiwanese and Vietnamese, especial on issues in the private sphere, e.g. homosexuality, abortion, suicide, and euthanasia. Generally speaking, patriarchal family systems continue to prevail in these three societies. |
