Anti-Chinese riot happened in Rangoon on June 26, 1967 because the Cultural Revolution in Communist China spilled over into Burma. Meanwhile, Ne Win, Burma's military general and dictator, used the accident to distract people's dissatisfaction with its military regime and to further hamper the mitigation process and crisis of its political legitimacy. Heretofore, CCP's uniting Overseas Chinese in Burma, some pro-Beijing Chinese and international anti-Chinese environment were objective cause for anti-Chinese riot. The riot resulted in Overseas Chinese dead and deep economic loss in Burma. Their living conditions worsened, so many Overseas Chinese remigrated. The anti-Chinese riot forced Chinese to expedite naturalization and assimilation, which made them conceal self-identity and Chineseness. The accident taught them, through the experience, how to protect their interests. During the change from Chinese national into Burmese citizenship, the anti-Chinese riot in 1967 had an accelerating function. |
