The purpose of this study is to investigate the talent development of students with hearing impairment from the strength-based perspective. Theoretically, providing stu-dents opportunities to develop their talents is the ultimate goal of education. This effort should be extended to a wider range of diverse background students, especially stu-dents with special needs. However, most of the identification of giftedness and educa-tional program for students with special needs are more deficit-based oriented than strength-based. This study will delineate the talent development of students with hear-ing impairment from the strength-based perspective. A case study method is imple-mented in this study. One student with hearing impairment was participated in this study. The data were collected from in-depth individual interviews, informal observa-tions and related documents and analyzed qualitatively. It is found that the processes of talent development of students with hearing impairment are very unique. The pro-cesses of talent development have been shaped by student's giftedness, critical events, and parents' support. However, parents' positive attitude and expectations for success-ful learning toward students' special needs, and the cultivation of personality traits, are the key factors to the talent development of students with hearing impairment. Sug-gestions regarding to the educational program for hearing impairment children from the perspective of the theory of talent development are provided based on the results of the study. |
