During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, people and objects were the focus of aesthetic consciousness. Many researchers focused on description and appreciation of intellectuals in “Shi Shuo Xin Yu”. However they neglected these intellectuals’ reflection on items, which is a pity. Therefore my thesis will focus on intellectuals’ passion for items during the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Firstly, I studied the attitude towards objects of both Confucianism and Taoism intellectuals in the early Qin dynasty and intellectuals in the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Secondly, I divided the objects mentioned in “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” into several main categories—pets (including dogs, horses, birds), jewels and implements, food and beverages (including wine and medicine) and others. Thirdly, I analyzed the type of passion towards items and thoughts of intellectuals in “Shi Shuo Xin Yu”. My thesis gave a glimpse of the era trait while approaching intellectuals’ passion for items during the Wei and Jin Dynasties. |
