The maximum muscle strength assessment is very important for the arrangement of the training program and the management of fatigue. Traditional assessment methods are often time-consuming and exhaustive. Therefore, many alternative methods and prediction equations appears. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the velocity measurement in bench press exercise and the application of velocity parameters to predict the maximum muscle strength of the bench press exercise. With the advancement of kinematic technology, linear position transducer has the ability to measure barbell velocity of bench press exercise. Velocity of bench press exercise can be measured in mean concentric velocity, mean propulsive velocity and peak velocity. Researches on bench press velocity parameters show a high correlation between velocity and load. As long as establishing the relationship between velocity and load, the maximum muscle strength can be predicted. Current researches show that mean concentric velocity and mean propulsive velocity can effectively predict the maximum strength of the bench press exercise. However, which one has a higher prediction accuracy remains questionable. In the future, if researches relate to velocity parameter prediction of maximum muscle strength can be applied to different free weight exercises, it can provide coaches with more information about velocity training quantification and accurate assessment of fatigue status. |
