The Center for General Education at Chang Gung University has designed a core curriculum aiming at enhancing students' humanities and social literacy, strengthening their reading and writing ability, and improving their understanding and critical thinking ability. Courses in the core curriculum are 3- credit courses, with 2 hours of lecture and 1 hour of class activities. The class activities may include thematic discussions, debates or other creative activities, which can deepen students' understanding of the course, and arouse their interest in probing deeper into course topics. The core curriculum stresses classic literature reading and review, intellectual enquiries, and topic-oriented assignments. Every course in the core curriculum has passed a rigorous review by three academic experts in general education or other related professional fields outside the school. Every course recruits as teaching assistants masters and doctoral students from related fields of study outside the school. These teaching assistants' duties include helping students understand course material, leading group discussions, and reviewing students' reports. The core curriculum of the Center for General Education seeks to cultivate the characteristics necessary for student growth and learning, including a broad vision, a care for the society, a strong sense of group cooperation and ethics, the ability to be independent, and the capability to face future challenges. |
