Writing relates to the trend of the time, including common fonts and the way people write. In his “Non-cursive,” Zhao Yi in the Han Dynasty affirmed that writing requires talent and opposed the socially impractical cursive trend at that time. The article could be taken as the criterion of examining the transition of fonts and personal writing modes, that is, the article established the criticism of wordings and writing styles of its time. Later generations, however, found cursive writing a better way to feel body movements from the way writing flowed. Hence, the brush-movement has become the core value of writing. The movement of the brush means the way that the brush properly drifts with that of the body, which can be analyzed and judged by the shapes of the lines. Nevertheless, contemporary calligraphers have given priority to peculiar lines and forms. To achieve strong visual effects, calligraphers rarely follow traditional writing techniques even with a Chinese brush. Alternatively, they have even worked on the screen of computers without using paper. Furthermore, how writing is displayed has also turned into a way of space building. Contemporary calligraphy has decentralized the movement of the brush. Because of the new methods of producing words, writing has extended to the realms other than its own. |
