"The butterflies fauna was investigated in the Lantan Area of Chiayi, west-central Taiwan during January 2002 to April, 2003. The Lantan area has low-elevation hills covered by broadleaf evergreen forests. The results indicated that 53 species belonging to 7 families were found in this area. Numbers of species were 10 of the Papilionidae, 8 of the Pieridae, 3 of the Danaidae, 12 of the Nymphalidae, 12 of the Satyridae, 5 of the Lycaenidae and 3 of the Hesperiidae. Aero-net and visual count were used to survey the butterflies, and the indices of family richness were 0.0462 in the Papilionidae, 0.6458 in the Pieridae, 0.0076 in the Danaidae, 0.0537 in the Nymphalidae, 0.0158 in the Satyridae, 0.2296 in the Lycaenidae and 0.0011 in the Hesperiidae. February 2003 ranked first, with 517 counts in terms of numbers of butterflies sighted. Butterflies were collected using moth traps form January 2002 to April 2003. The Pieridae, Nymphalidae and Satyridae had rates of trapping of 1.87 %, 8.61 %, and 89.51 % respectively. The rate of trapping of Satyridae was the highest. March and May 2003 ranked first and second, respectively, in terms of species and numbers of butterflies trapped with 12 families 50 counts and 10 families 39 counts. Pieris rapae crucivora, Zizeeria maha okinawana, Pieris canidia canidia, Catopsilia pomona pomona, Eurema hecabe hobsoni and Melanitis phedima polishana were the most-common species." |
