"Xie Xuehong as an advocator of Taiwan Independence has erroneously been rooted in people's mind. Such a misconception resulted from Fang-Ming Chen's biased characterization, built upon distorted historical material. Profoundly influenced by Chen's superimposition, Taiwanese readers unknowingly anticipate Taiwan's future by identifying with Xie's trajectory, a situation manifested in Marc Bloch's mirror of collective consciousness. This paper examines how socialist Xie Xuehong, with threefold national identity, experienced 'left independence,' 'left unification,' and 'democratic autonomy' in different milieus. The fact that Xie modified her political identity exemplifies how a socialist attempted to survive under constantly changing circumstances. Since her exile in China, what did not change is her insistence upon Taiwan's autonomy." |
