夏曼‧藍波安的創作由1992年至今，將回歸蘭嶼的想望與文化的凋零寄託於海洋，且將自我的族群認同之路築在海洋之上；他以文字為媒介，用書寫來記錄。無論是知識的學海，或是達悟的原初之海，「海洋」不只是他認同的轉變與重建所必須跨越的主體，亦是跨越時所必經的橋樑。當夏曼‧藍波安藉著勞動的狀態重新回返為「雅美男人」，勞動的過程與場域亦成為他書寫的主題，不僅書寫勞動者如何藉由勞動來實踐達悟文化的底蘊，也特意將耆老們的智慧譜於文字，使記憶／技藝得以延續，唯他所書寫的「勞動者」多是男人，女人反而是缺席的。本文將討論夏曼‧藍波安文本中的人／達悟／海洋，並指出其中特屬於達悟男人的海洋特質。
