"“Student evaluations of teaching” is widely adopted by universities serving as a major method for evaluating teachers’ teaching effectiveness. The application of the evaluation results have been shifted from the improvement on teaching to the personnel decisions. Since then, universities have made significant effort through investing a lot of time, manpower, and resources to promote this practice. In addition, the issues about “student evaluations of teaching” have been continuing explored but yet remained controversial. This study further investigated the perceptions and perspectives of teachers and students on “student evaluations of teaching” in two universities. About 25 teachers and 120 students in each university completed the survey. The findings show that there was some consensus between teachers and students, but still some gaps appeared. The results of this study suggest that policy makers of student evaluations of teaching should re-examine the rationale of its practice, including the purpose of the evaluation, the way it is implemented, and the application of its results. In particular, the gap between teachers and students should be fully understood and resolved in order to dispel the doubtsso as to construct a formative-orientated, open, transparent, specific and objective policy that is suitable for the university." |
