"As there are figures of speech and contradictory words in Koan and poetry, the readers will not only understand them in terms of the literal meanings. They are forced to be conscious that they are perceiving what they are engaged in at that moment. Therefore, the fixed attitude toward things and the world is further softened. Finally, the poetic language is used to depict the self and world from the new perspective. As for the discussion on the modern Zen poetry, we should distinguish between the modern Zen poetry and Buddhist poetry. A Zen poem should not only be one with the Buddhist or Zen terms. Instead, it could make the readers aware of their own consciousness and have a different view of the world. In terms of this definition, it could be regarded as a modern Zen poem. Reading Xiao Xiao’s poems from this perspective, we will find the abundance and diversity in his Zen poetry, which is worth a deeper discussion." |
