"Speaking of the poetry related to Taiwan, quite a few are focused on from a post-colonial perspective, reproducing the oppressed experiences in the colonial period, as well as the gap, suffering, and torture caused by the cultural hegemonies. Chen-Li, a middle-aged poet, created a large number of poetry in the post-colonial background. In a good-natured style, he described not only the exploitation committed politically and economically by colonial empires, but also their harassment, domination, and infiltration aimed at colonial culture. Besides, because of his long residence in Hualien County, in the east of Taiwan, Chen-Li showed his great consideration for the marginalized situation which the aboriginals had faced. With his long-term observation on the life and culture of Amis and Bunun, which are two main tribes in Hualien, he collected some creative elements originated from their ritual ceremonies, folk songs and dances performed in various festivals, and wide-spreading legends. With the poetry in a style of“similar”ballad, He expressed his concern about the fading aboriginal culture. On the basis of the approaches of textual analysis and cultural study, this paper is aimed to discuss three poems of Chen-Li’s poetry in a style of“similar”balled and two poems originated from the myths and legends. It is expected to discuss and comprehend which motivation of his poetry in a style of“similar”ballad is, either a simple expression of prospering and concerning aboriginal culture, or striving for the change and improvement in his skills and subject matters of poetry so as to become as his own unique of view point? At the same time, it is also expected to discuss what role the poetry in a style of“similar”ballad plays, what change it results in, and what significance it has in Chen-Li’s creation process?" |
