This study focuses on the intrinsic relationship between craft and modern art. It begins with the socio-semantic evolution of the terms “craft” and “art” and explores the social basis for their mutual distinction. In the process of social construction, the two exhibit different facets in several ways. By digging into the issue of artistry, we can observe that both are artistic in the Heideggerian sense. Starting with the material aspect, the artistic nature of the craftwork is easily revealed. This study attempts to demonstrate that modern craft will likely enrich the breadth and depth of modern art if craftsmanship is incorporated into the process of art creation. Furthermore, the field of modern crafts has the potential to develop, based on craftsmanship, a new form of art that is different from modern art. |
