As one of the foremost authorities of contemporary Taiwanese literature, Yang Mu is renowned as a poet, essayist, translator, and scholar. However, some readers might not be fully aware of his sharp criticism of modern poetry. His prefaces and postscripts have not yet been taken as one of the research perspectives in ''Yang Mu Studies.'' A study of these materials extending to Yang’s criticism of modern poetry would be a fresh and inventive research angle. This article lists Yang’s prefaces and postscripts written for other poets. It will then trace Yang’s academic training, introduce the analytical trajectory and contribution of his doctoral dissertation; and, highlight how the poet’s critical subjectivity transitions from the tradition of Chinese lyric poetry to modern poetry. The article then delves into the elements of narrative in Yang’s prefaces and postscripts. Influenced by an academic training of the East and the West, these texts are characterized by the records among the literati, dramatic monologues, the close reading of New Criticism, thematic interpretations, articulations of his views on poetry, researches of literary history, and com parative studies of Eastern and Western literature. In the hope of tracing his literary awareness and cultural impact, the article probes Yang’s crosscultural poetics by evaluating these elements. |
