This paper will compare the cult of the sea goddess Mazu, (or Tianhou in Hong Kong) from an anthropological perspective. Seven aspects will be included, firstly is the terminology of the goddess. Secondly is about the state control on the cult. Thirdly is the attributes of the goddess. The fourth is about one Tianhou temple in Lantau Island. The fifth is water inspection tour in Lantau Island. The sixth is about other sea god belief in Hong Kong. The seventh is about the anthropomorphism of Chinese religion. |
