Due to the passage of time, “Drum stands,” cultural relics collected by the National Center for Traditional Arts, appear deteriorated and damaged, and this condition has affected the stands’ functions of conservation, actual use, exhibition and educating the public on cultural relics. To extend the life of these cultural relics, the National Center for Traditional Arts decided to restore them and resume their original functions in addition to restoring their deteriorated, defective and damaged parts. Moreover, it was hoped that the restoration efforts of traditional craftsmen could restore the life of these cultural relics and allow them to function within their cultural context. Therefore, the center’s concept and method of restoring considerations were somewhat different from the restoration task of a museum. Based on the restoration of “drum stands” by traditional craftsmen entrusted by the National Center for Traditional Arts, this study analyzed and documented the establishment of restoration principles, the cultural relics’ state inspection, the techniques of tenon and mortise joints as well as the restoration process. |
