In the mountain region“Erzgebirge”, a German world heritage project“Mining Landscape Ore Mountains”, the more than 800 years of mining activities left plenty of historic monuments from each mining period forming a unique industrial landscape and deeply influencing the culture of the region. In 1998, the Erzgebirge was nominated for the German tentative list for the inscription on the UNESCO world heritage list. However, due to the change of conservation policy, the project was stopped. Fortunately, with the cooperation between local council, civil society and academy, a World Heritage Project Group was established to continue the project in 2003. The project pushed the government to continue related works and application process. It is planned to apply for the UNESCO world heritage nomination in 2013. |
