On May 15, 2020, Hsieh Chih-Hung was acquitted by the Tainan High Court after a year-long retrial (see the Judgment of Tainan High Court (2019) Zai Zih No.1). This verdict, which finally overturned the death sentence that haunted Hsieh for years, is hard to come by. As a member of the team that helped exonerating Hsieh, the author reviewed this not-guilty verdict as well as critical moments during the court sessions from the perspective of a campaigner for Hsieh’s innocence, rendering a conclusion that the verdict is a result of three key factors: the civil society’s joint efforts, the collaboration between the judicial and administrative branches, and a halt in executions of possibly innocent death row inmates. |
