The Diaoyutai Islands are islands affiliated to Taiwan, although there are many discourses on their sovereignty and legal basis this is not considered here. This article introduces the history of Taiwan's only ancient Chinese junk ''Free China'', describing its tortuous voyage and the process of repatriating it back to Taiwan, highlighting the importance of this cultural heritage. Thereafter, using historical evidence, this research proves that the crew of the ship landed on Diaoyutai Island in 1955 and restored its coastal waters as a traditional area where Taiwanese fishermen are free to sail and live fishing. This article aims to provide alternative views and arguments in the discussion of Diaoyutai sovereignty and related issues from the perspective of cultural heritage preservation, traditional territory and exercise of sovereignty. Finally, it proposes several suggestions for future study on historic evidence and archive preservation. |
