This project, termed“the Historical Wallpainting Conservation and Preservation Project”focusses on the“Fu-Long Temple wallpainting”located at Shizitou, Baxiejing, Tainan. This wallpainting is recognized as one of the later works by Mr. Tsai, Tshau-Ju. Owing to the temple tradition of constantly burning incense and candles which emit a significant amount of organic volatiles and particles into the atmosphere which turn into tar and soot-like particles combined with airborne dust that have accumulated on the surface of the mural . After several decades, the surface of the wallpainting has become coated with layers of contaminants, so that now it is very difficult to identify the original painting. Therefore, removing the contaminant layers is crucial but a considerable challenge. During the preliminary examination and inspection, the paint of the wallpainting appears to remain intact with only minor surface deterioration. With this finding, the goal of the project is to remove the overburden of obscuring soot and tar. The proposed project was divided into three phases: First, using image-analysis to determine the extent of damage and to map the different degrees of damages over the entire painted surface. Secondly, using analytical equipment to identify the compositions of the contaminants and the possible causes of deterioration. After a full understanding the causes of deterioration and the composition of the obscuring layer had been determined, test cleaning and evaluation was performed. Knowing the sensitivity of the murals to different cleaning solutions then allowed conservation interventions and retouching to be performed. |
