This paper discusses the process by which local citizens participate in a cultural event relating to Miaoli’s Old Kilns. It is introduced in two ways. It traces how the kiln cultural industry made the transition from a traditional to modern technology and uses reports, seminars, forums, media and the Internet to connect with the kiln workers, the academics and the mass media. In analyzing this dialogue it is clear that traditional culture and development need not be in conflict but that diverse cultures can coexist. Cultural heritage can transform and develop through new imagination and can empower the local civil population. |
