This paper explores the problems and challenges faced when restoring historical buildings in urban and rural areas; whether it is preservation proposed by local residents, the National Property Administration’s bid and sale, or the local government’s management, all sides have differences in understanding of a historical building’s value and definition. Therefore, this paper utilizes a case study to study the process and its effect on cultural empowerment. The primary research methods are interviews and observation through participation, supplemented by document review and analysis through the perspective of cultural sociology to explore the effect of cultural empowerment on cultural society and how it is utilized during the restoration of historical spaces. Finally after concluding on the results of cultural empowerment in the case study, the paper reflects on the social meaning of preserving historical buildings and attempts to explore the essence of cultural building restoration. It uses the three facets of memory preservation, the public, and understanding of preservation and restoration to form a new perspective on restoration design methods. |
