I was recently asked to contribute to the Newsletter of TCSL by one of my teachers at ICLP. Although I am certainly no expert in the field of Chinese studies, I do have ample experience in the frustrations and joys that come with learning a new language. This is not meant to be a scholarly article on the process of learning a language, but simply a recollection of some of the pitfalls encountered on my path to language proficiency. My Chinese education started during my last year of college. I attended Hamilton College, a small liberal arts college in New York with an excellent Chinese Language program. For those unfamiliar with the education system in the United States, senior year in most colleges requires a thesis to be written in one' s major. For many, this is their first experience of having to set one's own deadlines and rate of progress, and most (including myself) often resort to last minute shotgun tactics in getting the work done. |
