Before getting into possibilities, we need to define what is meant by mastery. What does it mean to master something? It is defined by American Heritage dictionary as: ''Possession of consummate skill'' or ''Full command of a subject of study''. What we want to know here is, is it indeed possible for a non-native to possess consummate skill in listening, speaking, reading and writing Mandarin Chinese. Is it possible to obtain full command of the Chinese language? Many people (and unfortunately some language teachers) say things like, ''After one has reached the age of 7, it is no longer possible to speak another language like a native.'' or ''Adults can't learn language as well as children.'' People say a lot of things that aren't correct. Many well-intentioned teachers do damage to their students by telling them to not even bother striving for a native accent as it's just a waste of time, except for a chosen few. As such, they clip their students' wings before they learn to fly, so to speak. Most likely, the people who say these types of things have either tried and failed or didn't even try. |
