The p urpose of this study was to investigate the parenting styles of deaf parents/ heari ng children. The participants were three families with deaf parents and at least one child with normal hearing. In - depth interviews were used to gather the data, and the main research tools employed were a list of interview questions, observation records, and records of written communications (some conducted using LINE). The main findings were as follows: 1. The participants’ parenting styles were influenced by their personalities. In all three families the deaf parents took primary responsibility for raising their children, and their parenting styles were characterized by high degrees of concern, control, and support. As for their attitudes about parenting, each set of parents was found to be highly proactive, also giving much importance to setting a good example in one’s own conduct. 2. For help in raising their children, the participants mainly rely on their own parents, members of their church, and other deaf parents. 3. The main difficulties experienced by the participants were found to be related to verbal communication, especially their children’s acquisition and development of oral language skills. 4. When they encounter difficulties in raising their children, if they can’t find their own solution, then the participants typically seek advice from other deaf parents, friends with normal hearing, or their parents. |
