The purpose of this study is to measure new staff nurses’ quantitative change in depression, anxiety and self-esteem after participating in support group therapy. The subjects are recruited from a medical center in southern Taiwan using the quasi-experimental design. Thesubjects are assigned to the experimental group or control group depending on purposive sampling. The experimental groups received a total of 4 therapeutic sessions which lasted 90 minutes each and the sessions were held biweekly. This study examines the effectiveness of a support group through a structured questionnaire. The experimental group or control group of subjects accept a test at pre-group and post-group. This is to understand the alteration of the subject's depression, anxiety and self-esteem. In both groups, new nursing faculty's self-esteem, depression and anxiety were measured by Rosenberg sale and visual analog scale of anxiety and depression. This was conducted before and after their participation in the group therapy. 46 new staff nurses (the experimental group=23, control group=23) participated in the study. Statistically, there is a signifi cant difference in depression between the two groups. There is no statistically signifi cant in self esteem and anxiety improvement. The experimental group has higher self-esteem and lower anxiety. The highest scored item from the satisfaction survey was "I like this group", yielding a score of 8.05 (full score: 10). Participants approved the effort of the support group therapy. The degree of their group therapy satisfaction increased everytime. |
