Military history has never gained enough attention among historical studies. However, it is not uncommon in many countries that popular books and films revolving around military history appeal to a large quantity of readers/viewers. Conducting research in a research institution, I have been endowed with the opportunity to interview a few veterans, especially retired naval officers, which led me to the research of naval history with the help of the military archives stored in the Ministry of National Defense. This paper is composed of two parts. The first part reviews my personal experiences and reflections on interviewing military veterans, and the second part introduces briefly the materials stored in the military archives and touches upon the use of these materials. It is hoped that the sharing of my experiences will trigger more people to focus on the research in military history. |
