The salt industrial archives were acquired and transferred from Taiwan Salt Industrial Corporation (TSIC) and Tung-Hsiao Electrodialysis Salt Factory. The documents were concerned about possible loss and damage caused by the privatization of TSIC in 2003. The National Archives Administration collected the materials in accordance with Archives Act. After completing the primary inventory of the archives, there are time and budget constraints for the implementation of digital archives. It is necessary to use archival appraisal practices to select appropriate materials for digitalization. This article aims to review the history of TSIC and trace the origin of the salt industrial archives. The salt industrial issues, which were the most concerned during 1982 to 2003, are also compiled in this paper. In archival appraisal practices, some subjects, such as mechanization of salt pans, pollution at An-Shun Salt Plant of Taiwan Alkali Corporation, slat workers' labor dispute, cultural heritage conservation and so on were selected to provide references for the future developing of the value-added services program of digital archives. Furthermore, the author expects the program will develop a virtual museum with multiple applications, and optimize functions of research, custody, exhibition, and education. In addition to access and retrieval of digital content, the author also proposes using information technology for innovative presentations combining education with recreation in the museum. |
