In the second semester of academic year 2018, we offered an LLM. course entitled “Interdisciplinary Studies of Law”. Our problem-based learning teamwork was set to discuss the question: “In the rule-of-law prosperous Taiwan society that children are coddled and treasured, why do we witness so many accidental deaths of young kids under the protection of caretakers and the law”. Based on child protection principles set in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, each team searched for targeted internet reports on child accidents, which had caused serious physical and/or mental harms to children. We carefully read the reported stories for making narrative analyses to locate “risk factors” that might have caused the unexpected accidents. We also tried to make socio-legal observations on the relevance of found “risk factors” to Taiwan laws. With this article, we hope to draw more expert attention to conduct systematic child death reviews, from which effective measures may be developed to return a safe childhood to Taiwan children. |
