There are around six hundred households of Muslims in Laos. It is less than 1/1000 of Lao population. Comparing to Thailand and Myanmar’s over 5% of Muslim population, Muslims in Lao are regarded as “Silent Ummah” (community). The majority of Muslims in Laos are Chams, South Asians and Laotians. In the capital Vientiane, there are two mosques, namely the Azahar Masjid and Jamia Masjid. The Cham and Laotian Muslims gather in Azahar Masjid, and they are followers of Shafi’ite school, while the South Asian Muslims following Hanafite school gather at Jamia Masjid. Muslim Association of Laos is located at Jamia Masjid and is responsible for communicating with and lobbying to central government. As being the followers of different Shari’ah schools, the two communities polarize and interact infrequently. In general, financial aid from Arab and Islamic organizations has been made to Jamia Masjid community. Therefore, the community of Azahar Masjid often faces the financial difficulties and obtains little assistance from outside. This leads to the unbalanced situation for the community. Under the disadvantage of less cooperation and systematical promotion, the development of Islam in the Laos has been very slow. The relations between Muslims and Buddhists in Lao are peaceful, because of the small population of Muslims who would not pose threat to the majority of Laotians, and hardly any conflict happened there. The relations and brotherhood between Cham, South Asian and Laotian Muslims so far maintain in peaceful condition.
