The author has researched Dewey’s educational ideology for numerous years. Early in these investigations, the author recognized the reputation and accomplishments of Tsuin-Chen Ou in the field of research on Dewey’s ideas. Tsuin-Chen Ou became established in the field in the 1930s, and the scholar’s research style has been instrumental and exemplary for later scholars. Thus, Ou’s legacy motivated the author to write the present paper. Based on a review of the author’s own research on Dewey’s educational ideology, the author identified the professional merits of the famous Deweyan scholar, Ou. Ou met with Dewey three times to clarify relevant concerns, and completed two periods of study in the United States in which the scholar comprehensively and critically analyzed Dewey’s educational thoughts and edited the chrolonogy of Dewey’s work to enrich the scholar’s own background knowledge. After analyzing Ou’s main works on Dewey’s educational ideology, the author concluded that Ou’s intellectual honesty and critical attitude should be studied and emulated, and Ou’s criticism of Dewey’s theories regarding subject matter, teaching methods, and the goals of education should be further discussed. Future studies may examine Dewey’s educational ideology from artistic or aesthetic perspectives, and the implications of the critical methods adopted by Ou should be considered in supplementary explanations. |
